‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.’ (John 20:21)
Whether we hear it at church, discuss it at a retreat, or read it in the bible ourselves, we are regularly provided encouraging reminders to spread the Gospel, to share the Good News, and to witness to the graces of a life of faith. But that’s quite a task – the Gospel is a big deal and sharing it is a big responsibility. It may feel intimidating at times and something more suited for a minister, teacher, or someone else with extensive spiritual knowledge or experience. Are we equipped to take on such an important task of faith for the Lord? Yes! Because not only do we need to continue to hear the message and be nourished and grow in faith ourselves, but we also need to be steadfast messengers. ‘We are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us.’ (2 Cor 5:20)
It may be easier to do than we think. Through the faith alive in our hearts, we spread the Gospel when we both share and openly live our journeys of faith as we are called to do. It is especially in how we encounter others in God’s love and goodness. Do we respond with grace during a difficult conversation? Do we offer compassion when it’s needed? Do we share the moments when God revealed Himself to us and worked in our spirit? This is how we share the Good News of a life in loving trust and faith in God.
This weekend Father challenged the congregation to intentionally share the Good News of the extraordinary love of God, and he provided some simple but impactful words to start with: God loves you. Your life has purpose. Do not be afraid. The Lord wants you to open your heart so He can fill it with His grace. These are meant for us and for those whom we encounter. Whether we engage in faith with just one person at a time or a small group or a full audience, and despite our weaknesses and failings, we are equipped in grace by the love, mercy, and strength of the Lord to be His witnesses.
‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.’ (Mark 16:15)
