“Be Constant in Prayer”

Several years ago, I had a friend who often wore a round pink button on her coat that read “PUSH” (pray until something happens). I appreciated her testimony of faith, and it was a nice, simple reminder to not give up on prayer. Our call to be persistent in prayer, both individually and as a community, was the theme of last weekend’s readings (Ex 17:8-13; Luke 18:1-8), homily, and pastor’s column. I was especially comforted by the pastor’s message in which he acknowledged that in our prayer, we may at times feel discouraged and think God doesn’t hear us. I have felt that way; maybe you have, too. It is absolutely in those times that we are called to be persistent in prayer because we know in our spirit that what we perceive as silence does not mean God does not hear us.

While we are being persistent in prayer, it is vital that we don’t lose heart – or hope. That’s pretty easy when our journey seems to be going well, and our current path is clear and fulfilling. We have great gratitude for those times, but sometimes praying takes courage; it certainly takes trust. We might pray for an answer or resolution, but what we receive is far from what WE had in mind or want to do. Or we might pray about one issue for a very long time and are disheartened at not yet receiving an answer. But in faithful courage, we follow what the Lord is showing us even when it feels uncomfortable. And in complete trust, even when it is difficult, we continue to wait in prayer for His perfect timing. In a previous reflection, I mentioned the following verse as one I often ‘go to.’ Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. (Rom 12:12). Words of strength, trust, and faith to live by! The line covers a lot of spiritual ground in just a few words. It’s also quite a road map to get us through our days, trusting that our continued prayers are heard and embraced.

As we know, our prayerful conversation with God is one of honest sharing, listening, and accompanying. And as we continue to grow in relationship with Him, we must be open to engaging in all three. Our persistent prayer includes sharing our deepest joys, desires, and worries; listening for His voice, wisdom, and counsel; and inviting Him to accompany us as we seek His grace to sustain us.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. (Eph 6:18)
