Letting Go in Trust

Many years ago, a friend who was the business owner of the office next door told me that an employee had just filed a lawsuit against him. It was serious, so I was very upset for him. He seemed calmer than I would have expected, so I asked if he was worried. I was surprised by his answer when he confidently said “No, God will take care of it.” He didn’t say he would win the case; he said God would take care of it. I remember how much in awe I was at his complete trust in God’s will. I’m still in awe. That’s a level of trust I hope to attain. Yet in my weakness, it has been one of the most challenging things to do.

Through our faith, we ‘know’ that we should trust in God completely and give Him our worries. We ‘know’ He wants our burdens, so He can relieve our anxieties. We ‘know’ he has a plan for us even though we can’t see it. We ‘know’ that He will lead us if we are willing to follow. I am guilty of ‘knowing’ these but not always believing or trusting. I’m guilty of making my plans first, then asking God for help to see them through. As I recall my friend’s testimony that ‘God will take care of it,’ I’m very grateful to be strengthened by his example of faith, trust, and surrender.

There is so much we try to control. There is so much we don’t understand. And while we are certainly supposed to continue on our journeys by setting goals, making plans, and moving forward, we must prayerfully ask that the Lord hold us in all that we do.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:6-7)

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him. (1 Cor 2:9)

Let us pray that we stop resisting the goodness of God’s will for us, so we may live in peace and freedom. May we not only know but also believe and trust that in letting go, God will take care of it.
