Do you have a collection of something? When I was younger, I had a collection of dolls from various European countries. They were mostly from places my parents visited throughout the years. The dolls, all female, were similar in size and shape, but their clothing reflected their countries. I remember my father put up special shelves in my bedroom, so I could display them nicely. Now I think they are individually wrapped in a box in my daughter’s attic. I also had a collection of small glass or porcelain (a.k.a. breakable) animals. They were also displayed on a shelf in my bedroom. I have no idea where those are now.
As I’ve grown older, what I ‘collect’ is much different. Instead of actual items, I realized what I collect now tends to be more inspirational or strengthening. Above my writing space, I have several encouraging quotes and phrases from a variety of sources. I find them helpful when I take the time to reflect on them. Even more enriching and meaningful, again when I take the time to pray on them, I find that I have been mentally collecting quotes or verses from scripture that have resonated with me in some way and at a particular time. If you have verses that you ‘go back to,’ then you’ve probably been collecting some, too. And for me, just like the gift they are, these words and thoughts are provided when I need them most.
Sometimes these verses just show up – I have a checkbook cover with “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” (Phil 4:13) It doesn’t take the sting out of paying bills, but it is nice to come across on any given day. On both a framed print in my office and on the cover of a journal given to me, there is “She is clothed in strength and dignity and can laugh without fear of the future.” (Prv 31:25) I am trying to better recognize these offerings of prayer as they are presented to me and ‘collect’ those which especially work in my heart.
In a time when I was struggling with a specific issue, I came across “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not; In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Prv 3:5-6) It’s been several years, but I’ve not forgotten these words meant for me at the time, and I often go back to them. At a retreat several years ago, in the midst of discerning an important decision, I was given “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” (Matt 14:27) And at another retreat, as we prayed with a psalm and a verse from Isaiah, I ended up writing a special prayer: “Renew me, restore me, rescue me. You will let me see gladness and joy.”
In sharing this, I invite you to note and ‘collect’ the words, quotes, and verses you come across that help you pray, feel God’s presence, and know His love for you. Obviously, the bible is rich with countless words and themes of wisdom, love, and faith. But this practice isn’t just quoting the bible; it’s recognizing the words God wants you to hear. Whether in church or in a book or in conversation, notice what moves you to something more in that moment. You’ll end up with a beautiful and inspirational collection of grace meant just for you.
