When I watch TV, I’m a channel flipper. During commercials, I look to see what’s showing on other stations. By doing that, I often come across good movies. Usually, they are older films I’ve seen before. It strikes me that there are some movies I can skip – though good, once was enough. Others I enjoy watching again – even multiple times. I wonder why that is. I know what’s going to happen and what the characters are going to say, nothing is going to change. But I’m drawn in yet again.
We have a little bit of that kind of story ahead of us over the next three days. As we know, the Sacred Triduum begins tomorrow evening. We know the readings. We know the rituals. We know what’s going to happen and what the characters are going to say. And we are drawn in yet again. We are drawn in because this three-day ‘story’ calls to us. We are drawn in because our hearts, our journeys, and our faith are in different places than they were before. We are drawn in because we need to walk with Jesus – our friend, companion, and savior – and accompany Him, hear Him, and be moved by His sacrifice.
As we enter this Triduum, let us try to especially open our hearts to the experience of these three days. Where are our paths leading us as we walk with Jesus? What does He want us to see or hear or feel this time? As we gather at the foot of the cross, can we offer up what hurts or what keeps us from fully living in the love of Christ? The details, rituals, and symbolism of the Triduum are extraordinary and rich. As you experience them this time, pay attention to and pray with the ones that are working in you in a special way. On Holy Thursday, maybe it’s the presentation of the Holy Oils or washing of feet or silent Adoration at the Altar of Repose. On Good Friday, maybe it’s the bare altar or the haunting special intentions or venerating the cross. On Holy Saturday at the Easter Vigil, maybe it’s the Holy Fire or the transformation of darkness to light or the sacraments received by the newest members to our community of faith. On Easter Sunday, maybe it’s the life of the fresh flowers or the blessing with holy water or the joyful music we’ve been longing for. Let these special moments help draw you in again.
If you can’t attend some or any of these liturgies, that’s okay! In the quiet of your own space, you are invited to prayerfully open your heart to what the Lord wants to share with you this Triduum. May we all have a fruitful journey as we seek the renewal of the Resurrection.
